1. Generating hypotheses can occur both inductively and deductively; research shows that deductive is more impactful.

2. Students need to be able to explain their hypotheses and their conclusions.

What Does This Look Like in the Classroom?

1. Use a variety of strcutrued tasks to guide students through the process of generating/testing hypotheses:

systems analysis -- study the parts of a system

problem solving -- developing various solutions within given constraints

historical investigation -- constructing hypotheses

invention -- create a solution

decision making -- define criteria, apply weight to decide which choice makes the most sense

2. Model the process for the students.

3. Use familiar content when teaching the steps.

4. Allow the use of advanced organizers.


6. Allow time and opportunities for students to talk through their hypotheses and conclusions.
